What is Targeted Therapy?

Historically cancer treatment was very predictable and included a menu of chemo therapy “cocktails” that had tremendous toxicity and side effects.  One of the best advances in treatment over the last few years is the evolution of targeted therapies.  Every person has their own genetic blue print. Because no two cancers are exactly alike, the same treatment may drive different responses.

Molecular profiling decodes cancer. During the profiling process, many advanced tests are run that identify what is driving the cancer. By sharing information and participating in tumor boards, physicians learn how the cancer may behave and what treatments may be most effective, helping match cancer biomarkers to a specific treatment – increasing the probability of a positive outcome.

The results help providers take a range of different approaches and create a personalized treatment plan. This frequently includes identifying therapies which may not have been previously considered and matching patients to clinical trials.

The South Sound CARE Foundation has been fortunate to partner with Caris Life Sciences and Tempus over the years to bring this critical diagnostic tool to our patients and their providers.
