Cervical Cancer: Prevention and Screening
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. While cervical cancer rates have declined over the years, thousands of people are still affected each year. Take steps to protect your cervical health with:
Vaccination
Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by high-risk HPV infections. The Gardasil 9 vaccine protects against nine high-risk strains and is recommended for ages 9–45, with the first dose ideally at 11 or 12. Studies show significant declines in cervical cancer rates among vaccinated young women.
Screening
Screening detects cervical cancer early when treatment is most effective. The American Cancer Society recommends:
● Ages 21–29: Pap test every 3 years.
● Ages 30–65: Pap test every 3 years, HPV test every 5 years, or co-testing every 5 years.
If you’re due for screening or have questions about the HPV vaccine, talk to your doctor.
